I am an AE director in a rural part of AndersonCounty in South Carolina and was once very active in workplace programs. When guidelines for assessment and who could be counted, plus the cut back of training initiatives by HR managers in local industries came about, workplace ended up taking a lower priority for my program. However, I am now doing a good bit of WorkKeys preparation and assessment for the community but not for particular companies. I am interested in finding out what works in workplace education in 2008 and a friend recommended this listserve. I hope to gain insight from members and build up my workplace programs once again. As the moderator of the NIFL Workplace Literacy Discussion List, I try to send a welcoming message to each new subscriber. It's always interesting to our list members when new subscribers introduce themselves to the "old" list members and say a little bit about their connections to workplace literacy and their reasons for joining the list. I hope you will take the time to let us get to know you in this way. To post a message, send it to <workplace at nifl.gov>. In April of last year, we had a discussion about work readiness credentials. We had several guests who answered questions posed by the Workplace list members. In case you want to check out the discussion, background information can be found at <http://www.nifl.gov/lincs/discussions/workplace/07work_ready.html> and a summary of the full discussion is at <http://www.nifl.gov/lincs/discussions/workplace/07work_ready_discuss.html>. On Thursdays, I usually post a summary of resources that I have come across in the previous week. I have kept a running list of the resources that have been included and will be happy to forward this to you, if you would like it. Be forewarned! It’s a long list! Also, any resources you would like to suggest for inclusion can be sent directly to me at <djgbrian at utk.edu>. This list has been really active in responding to requests of list members for information or help related to Workplace literacy, and members often share information about resources and upcoming events. It's a great place to ask a question or suggest a topic about which you would like to elicit others' thoughts. Please feel free to do that also. In 2006, the Workplace Literacy Discussion List had a cross list discussion with the English Language Literacy discussion list. With the experts that are regular members of both lists, we mined each others' expertise in thinking about English Language Learners in the Workplace. If you would like to review the posts that were part of this discussion, go to the Workplace list archives at <http://www.nifl.gov/pipermail/workplace/2006/date.html> and begin with Workplace post #404. If you have any topics you would like to propose as a focus for a guest speaker, I would welcome your suggestions. And let me know of any other suggestions for the list that you have. Again, welcome!
