Greetings everyone. I have been on the list for a while but I don't think that I have introduced myself. I have been involved in adult education and literacy for over 30 years. I have worked as a tutor and administrator, but primarily as a researcher/evaluator. Until last July I taught adult education at the University of Auckland and before that ran the Auckland Workers Educational Association and was self-employed for seven years. Since last July I have been running a national workplace literacy research study aimed at identifying effective practice in order to inform national policy and funding. The Upskilling Partnerships project is scheduled to finish mid-2009 and will include 15 different types of programme (also covering different types of learners, locations, duration, intensity, providers etc). We have 8 courses underway at present and the remainder should start this year. To date we have interviewed and assessed over 250 learners pre-course and will probably get to 600+ by the end. We are just starting to get the first lot of post-programme data and the results will be released as we go along. The research is fairly comprehensive including formative, process and summative evaluation components and we will also include up to 7 return-on-investment analyses (not all companies are appropriate for ROIs). It is a very interesting project to be involved with, that's for sure. I enjoy hearing about other projects, programmes and debates on this listserv and look forward to more of the same in the future.
