Hi Dolores, I'm glad you posted your question because this is a good opportunity to tell you about some new resources, as well as some that have stood "the test of time" that will be very helpful for you. The National Institute for Literacy is retooling what used to be their LINCS Special Collections of online resources. One of the goals of the new collections is to have resources rigorously reviewed by staff and nationally known content experts to ensure that the accepted resources are high quality and evidence- or research-based to improve teaching and learning. Although this work is in the beginning stages, some resources have been reviewed and accepted for inclusion in the Workforce Competitiveness Collection. One of these may be especially helpful for your work: Embedded Learning Portal at http://www.dfes.gov.uk/readwriteplus/embeddedlearning (Click on the list of vocational, employability and community materials link to access the following): A variety of work-related basic skills curricula that are embedded in a functional context of job areas in specific industry clusters: Catering, Cleaning, Early Years (Child Care), Communication for International Nurses, Hairdressing, Horticulture, Hospitality, Painting, Production, Retail, Construction, Social Care, Transport, Warehousing, Entry-level Employment, Health and Safety, and others. Each industry area offers numerous curriculum modules to develop basic skills in context of work. Some other resources that have not yet gone through the review process yet but may be in the near future will also be helpful. Virginia Adult Learning Resource Center at http://www.valrc.org/publications/ See especially the Building Basic multi-level curriculum for building, landscape, plumbing trades. Pennsylvania's Workforce Education Research Center at http://www.pawerc.org Click on the WERC Electronic Discussion List resources in the left navigation bar for resources on numerous topics. Also, please see the archived LINCS Workforce Education Special Collection at http://www.nifl.gov/lincs/collections/collections.html for curriculum and background and research information. Best wishes in your work and look forward to hearing about any other great resources you find and use, Priscilla Carman >I am adding my name to the list and interested in sharing info. i >have been in adult ed for 16 years, english speaking only. my >center in baltimore is entering into a project for skills upgrade to >incumbant workers reading at the 3-6 grade level. they will be >primarily identified through their own efforts to enter training >programs. at first, we will be working with those who failed to >qualify in order to prepare them to try again. this may expand in >the future. primary industries will fill local needs in healthcare, >hospitality, construction, retail. i am looking for ideas on >workplace readiness and other skills enhancement topics for 3-4th >grade readers. we have identified various specific books such as >contemporarys foundation series, and new readers press voyager >series. but more is better, since we do not know yet what will work >best. we will also be getting from industries specific vocabulary >and/or math skills that we should also use. ideas? dolores bramer, >director of education, south baltimore learning center. > >---------------------------------------------------- >National Institute for Literacy >Workplace Literacy mailing list >Workplace at nifl.gov >To unsubscribe or change your subscription settings, please go to >http://www.nifl.gov/mailman/listinfo/workplace >Email delivered to psc3 at psu.edu -- Priscilla S.
