Research suggests that well-designed service learning programs can boost student attendance in school and develop students' sense of social and personal responsibility; in particular, community service involvement can help re-engage disconnected youth in their schools and communities. This Webinar will discuss the benefits and challenges of incorporating service learning into systems of multiple education pathways and other initiatives to connect youth to education and the workforce. http://www.workforce3one.org/public/webinars/details.cfm?id=257 <http://www.workforce3one.org/public/webinars/details.cfm?id=257> ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ >From the Center for Applied Linguistics (CAL) http://www.cal.org/caela "Effects of Instructional Hours and Intensity of Instruction on NRS Level Gain in Listening and Speaking" This digest reports on a descriptive study examining the relationship between student performance on BEST Plus and NRS level gain and class attendance. BEST Plus pretest and posttest data for nearly 7,000 examinees were analyzed to see how their performance at each National Reporting System (NRS) educational functioning level varied according to number of instructional hours and intensity of instruction. Results showed that across all NRS educational functioning levels, the greater the number of instructional hours, the higher the percentage of students who made an NRS level gain. There was also a general trend toward greater NRS level gain for students with high levels of instructional intensity than for those with low instructional intensity. Intensity of instruction had the greatest impact on students at the Beginning ESL Literacy, Low Intermediate ESL, and Advanced ESL levels. http://www.cal.org/resources/digest/levelgain.html ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ >From CPRN (Canadian Policy Research Networks) http://www.cprn.org <http://www.cprn.org/> "Labour Force Ageing and Skill Shortages in Canada and Ontario" The authors (Martin Cooke, Rob Downie, Julie Ann McMullin) review the demographic data, examine the age structures and retirement ages of different industries and occupations, isolate the relationship between skills shortages and labour force ageing and assess the impact of workforce ageing relative to a number of other factors that affect skill shortages. Finally, they investigate four "cases" in Ontario - nursing, information technology, skilled trades in manufacturing, and the biotechnology sector. http://www.cprn.org/documents/31517_en.pdf "Making Work Pay" This CPRN policy brief posits that Canadians believe that anyone who works full-time should be able to live decently, and that Canada has failed as a society to achieve this. The brief defines the situation and proposes a mix of policy changes to help remedy the situation. http://www.cprn.org/documents/42558_en.pdf ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ >From the Economic Policy Institute (EPI) http://www.epi.org/ Updated CBO data reveal unprecedented increase in inequality New high-quality data from the Congressional Budget Office reveal an historical sharp increase in household income inequality over the past few years. The increase in income concentration among the rich in the 2003-05 period has been the largest on record, and has resulted in a transfer of $400 billion from households in the bottom 95% of the income scale to those in the top 5%. http://www.epi.org/content.cfm/ib239 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Brought to our attention by Literacy Works (New Zealand) http://www.workbase.org.nz <http://www.workbase.org.nz/> Making Math Concrete (and Iron, and Plastic...)
