Peg and others,

In principle, the focus of the NIFL lists are open to a range of topics.
While there may be certain pressures to focus discussion to certain
topics and to avoid or limit the more controversial ones, there is
nothing prohibiting that as long as one focuses at least broadly on the
range of topics geared to the general purpose of the list. This list in
particular is open to a wide range of provocative discussion. Whether
listmembers choose to take on unpopular or controversial topics within
the broad frame of the particular purpose of a given list is another
matter. To a very extensive extent it's up to listmembers themselves to
decide upon the range of discussions and the extent to which they choose
to engage in what might be deemed controversial matters. While there
may be a fair degree of social pressure to keep topics restricted and
controversy toned down, I don't believe that such is a mandate from the
list managers. But, I could be wrong.
