I work for a literacy organization and we have a couple of hispanic students who will be tutored in a one-to-one setting. Their goals are to improve their English reading and writing skills. They read English in a low elementary school level, they have a very hard time to write, and their longterm goals are obtaining a GED or passing the citizenship exam. Most of them only went to school for a couple of years in their home country, so their reading levels in spanish are probably not very high either. Their spoken English is on a much higher level but they still need a lot of help with vocabulary and grammar. Listening Comprehension is no problem. I have found a lot of literacy skill books for native speakers who read at this level, but none for non-native speakers that pay more attention to vocabulary and grammar and still reflect their high speaking skills and the one-on-one setting. Our students read well enough that they don't need the very basic phonics help. Any suggestions? Thank you so much, any ideas and comments are appreciated.
